John M. Ophaug

John M. Ophaug practiced law in Northfield for over 40 years until his retirement in December 2020. His clients represented a wide spectrum of individuals, banks, farmers, small business owners, and townships. He practiced in the fields of real estate, estate planning and probate, business transactions, and township law.

John is a graduate of Carleton College and the University of Minnesota Law School. During his years practicing, John headed many local, civic, cultural, and bar associations. John was a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association Board of Governors and the Continuing Legal Education Board. He is also a past president of the MSBA Real Property Section. For 37 years, John taught in the economics and management studies department at St. Olaf College. John was named as a Super Lawyer by Law & Politics Magazine each year from 2002 to 2020.

John is an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Torske Klubben (Minneapolis), the Sons of Norway Nordmarka Lodge, and Nordmanns Forbundet. He has been a member of the Northfield Rotary Club for over 35 years, where he is a Paul Harris Fellow and past president.
